Use the label that matches the calculation

A result after variable costs is different from a result after fixed departure costs as well. State the definition before comparing two tours or calling either result profit.

The basic calculation

Contribution equals revenue less the costs you have chosen to deduct. Contribution margin expresses that amount as a percentage of revenue. Always state the cost definition, because a measure after variable costs differs from one that also deducts fixed departure costs.

A hypothetical tour example

A departure earns AUD 1,440. It has AUD 300 in variable guest costs, AUD 144 in commission and AUD 450 in fixed departure costs. After those included costs, contribution is AUD 546. Dividing AUD 546 by AUD 1,440 gives approximately 37.9%.

Why it is different from net profit

General overhead, financing costs and other business expenses may remain outside this calculation. Calling the result net profit would be misleading unless all relevant costs have been accounted for. Use the label that matches the actual calculation.
